Simply Singapore

Climate Change or Global Warming is alarming. We can see and feel the changes. We cannot blame a single person because the truth is we all contributed to it. Climate Change refers to the increase of temperature of the earth’s atmosphere, oceans and landmasses. Experts say that we are facing rapid warming brought by mounting levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

You should know that greenhouse gases are natural but because of human activities, more and more greenhouse gases are added into the atmosphere. You should know the different types of greenhouses for you to be aware. Here are the types:

climate

Carbon Dioxide – Carbon dioxide is part of the natural process but humans are increasing the amount of carbon dioxide released in the atmosphere through burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gas. Apart from burning, carbon emissions are seen when generating electricity, heating buildings and driving vehicles.

Methane – Methane is emitted during mining of coal and production of natural gas and oil. Methane can also be found in rotting organic matter, digestion by-product of animals, wetlands, etc.

Nitrous Oxide – Nitrous oxide comes from ploughing farm soils and burning fossil fuels.

Ozone – Nitrogen oxides and volatile organic gases released by automobiles and industrial plants can deplete the ozone layer, damage vegetation and kill trees.

Synthetic Chemicals – Human activities like manufacturing generate synthetic chemicals like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs).

In Singapore, the government is doing its best to reduce if not eliminate the emissions. In fact, the National Climate Change Secretariat, Prime Minister’s Office Singapore launched the 10% Energy Challenge. The program seeks to help households cut electricity use by 10%. Everything should start in the household. The government is recommending the use of energy efficient appliance. Let us think about Climate Change and do our part in reducing emissions.
